Charles Babbage was the first individual to invent a computer. The 5.5 min video clip below shows his machine (which he never was able to construct in his life) that he designed all within his mind. It's very impressive!
It's interesting how the times have changed. If I wanted to invent something, I would do all my brainstorming and drafting on a computer and test it out using computer software. Charles didn't have access to any of that and he was able to engineer a work of art to perform simple arithmetic functions.

I agree that we seem so dependent on other people's research and ideas. But I think our access to so much information makes innovation so much more possible. If we are able to struggle to form our own interpretations and improvements then we are being just as innovative as Babbage.
Do you wonder what Babbage could accomplish if he were to innovate with modern-day technology and computers? I believe he would be many steps ahead of us. After all, how many computer programmers do you know of that could design a perfect piece of code without bugs or errors? He was able to do so with not only his logic, but in his engineering as well. He simply lacked funding.
